Monthly Costs Comparison
How much does Shopify cost in the UK?
The short answer
A UK Shopify store pays two things every month: a plan fee and a percentage of every sale. Paid monthly, the standard plans run from £25 to £344. Pay twelve months up front and that becomes £19 to £259. On top of the plan, Shopify Payments takes between 1.5% and 2% plus 25p on every UK card transaction, depending which plan you are on. Everything else, apps, theme and third party gateway charges, is optional and specific to your store.
| Plan | Paid monthly | Paid yearly | UK online card rate | Third party transaction fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | £25/mo | £19/mo | 2% + 25p | 2% |
| Grow | £65/mo | £49/mo | 1.7% + 25p | 1% |
| Advanced | £344/mo | £259/mo | 1.5% + 25p | 0.6% |
| Plus | from £1,800/mo | By agreement | from 1.3% + 25p | 0.2% |
Two columns in that table cost UK stores more than all the others combined. The third party transaction fee is charged on top of whatever your external gateway already takes, so a Basic store running payments through someone other than Shopify Payments hands over 2% to Shopify before its gateway has taken a penny. The card rate matters even more, because it applies to every order you will ever process. Cutting it by 0.3% is worth more to a busy store than the entire difference between two plan fees.

What actually makes up your Shopify bill
The headline plan price is only ever part of the answer. What a UK store actually pays each month comes from four separate things, and the plan fee is usually the smallest of them once you are trading properly.
- The plan fee. A fixed monthly subscription, cheaper if you pay annually. This is the number everyone quotes and the one that matters least as you grow.
- Payment processing. A percentage of every sale plus a small fixed amount per transaction. The percentage falls as you move up the plans, which is why a higher plan can work out cheaper for a busier store.
- Third party transaction fees. An extra charge if you take payments through a gateway other than Shopify Payments. Avoidable for most UK stores, and expensive if ignored.
- Apps and theme. The part almost nobody budgets for. A few subscriptions for reviews, email, bundles or subscriptions add up quietly every month.
The table above gives you the published rates. The calculator gives you your number, because the plan fee and the card rate pull in opposite directions as you grow and no table can tell you where they cross for your store. Put your own revenue and order volume in and compare the plans side by side.
Shopify transaction fees explained
This is where UK stores most often lose money without noticing, because there are two different charges and they are easy to confuse.
Payment processing is what you pay to accept a card payment. Every platform has it. The third party transaction fee is different. It is an additional charge Shopify applies when you use an external gateway instead of Shopify Payments. If you are on an external gateway out of habit rather than necessity, you are effectively paying twice on the same order.
Higher plans reduce the processing percentage, and that is the real argument for upgrading. Past a certain volume, the saving on processing outweighs the higher subscription. The calculator shows where that crossover sits for your numbers.
What does Shopify take per sale?
Take a £50 order paid by UK card through Shopify Payments. A Basic store pays 2% plus 25p, so £1.25. On Grow that drops to 1.7% plus 25p, or £1.10. On Advanced it is 1.5% plus 25p, so exactly £1.00. Shopify takes nothing further out of the sale itself, as long as you are using Shopify Payments.
Move to an external gateway and the maths changes for the worse. Shopify adds its third party transaction fee on top of whatever that gateway charges you: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. On the same £50 order, a Basic store pays its gateway’s own fee and then another £1.00 to Shopify. That is the most expensive avoidable habit we see on UK stores.
Shopify POS and selling in person
If you sell in a shop, at markets or at events alongside your website, two more numbers apply. Casual in person selling is included on every plan. POS Pro, which adds the retail tooling most shops actually need, is £69 a month per location on Basic, Grow and Advanced.
In person card rates are lower than online rates, and there is no fixed pence charge per transaction: 1.7% on Basic, 1.6% on Grow and 1.5% on Advanced. If a meaningful share of your revenue comes across a counter rather than through a checkout, that gap is worth modelling before you settle on a plan.
The costs most stores forget
- Apps. Individually small, collectively the second largest line on many stores. Worth auditing yearly, because Shopify now handles natively what several paid apps used to.
- Theme. A one off cost for a premium theme, or a larger investment for something built around your brand.
- Design and development. The launch build, or the redesign and ongoing changes that follow it.
- Marketing. The platform gets you a shop. It does not get you customers.
None of these are reasons to avoid Shopify. They are the difference between a budget that survives contact with reality and one that does not. If you are costing up a build rather than just a subscription, our Shopify development team can scope it properly, and Shopify SEO is worth planning in from the start rather than bolting on later.

Shopify fees FAQs
Plans run from £25 to £344 a month paid monthly, or £19 to £259 a month if you pay twelve months up front. On top of that you pay between 1.5% and 2% plus 25p on every UK card sale, so two stores on the same plan can pay very different amounts. Use the calculator above with your own revenue and order volume for a realistic figure.
Usually. The quickest wins are paying annually rather than monthly, moving to Shopify Payments if you are on an external gateway, and checking your plan still matches your volume. Auditing your apps is the fourth, and the most commonly skipped.
Yes, and this catches a lot of growing stores out. Higher plans cost more monthly but cut the processing percentage on every order. Past a certain volume the processing saving is bigger than the extra subscription, which is precisely the crossover this calculator is built to show.
Shopify Plus starts at £1,800 a month in the UK and is quoted upwards from there depending on your volume and contract. It also cuts the card rate to 1.3% plus 25p and the third party transaction fee to 0.2%, which is why the sums start to work at scale rather than at launch. The honest test is not whether you can afford it, but whether you would use what it adds: B2B and wholesale, multiple storefronts and currencies, checkout customisation and deeper automation.
If you are weighing up the move, our Shopify Plus agency page covers what the tier actually changes and when the upgrade starts paying for itself.
